A 12V car battery will not run these by itself. Govee Pro (and this board) want 36 volts. At the house, garage, shed, office, or room: use the 36V wall brick that came with the lights. In a car, boat, or hangar: you need a 12V-to-36V boost converter sized for the watts, or a 36V battery pack. Don’t clip 12V straight to the board. I researched this: the expensive permanent-light companies look amazing, and Govee 36V already looks that good on a house. The stock brain is the part you outgrow — too few zones, locked firmware, an “off” that still sips power. Spark V1 is my drop-in for people who want WLED, four channels, and a real off switch — on a budget that still looks premium.

I’m Grady Gunter — Utah Tech Trailblazers goalie. I was excited to play college lacrosse. When I got there I realized how expensive things could be — rent, food, tuition, lax fees, gas, all of it. I had to come up with something to help pay.

So I designed Spark V1: a native 36-volt WLED controller with four independent channels and a relay that actually cuts power. Typical boards stop at one or two channels, skip 36V, and leave the strings sipping power all summer. Mine doesn’t. And it looks awesome. My crazy robotics dad and a cool neighbor who knows electronics helped me put it together. Two ports ready, add two more — four channels either way. We assemble each unit in the USA. FAQ

Stuff people actually ask me.

Will this run Govee Pro lights?

Yes. That’s why I built it native 36V — Govee Pro already looks like the expensive installs. Keep the kit’s supply and pucks. WLED is pre-set for WS281x, SK6812, and Govee Pro RGBW / RGBWC. Confirm your connector and color order — Govee has shipped more than one revision. (Of course they have.)

What else does it run?

Govee Pro is the headliner. It also works with a few other high-power addressable strings — WS281x, SK6812, and similar 36V-friendly setups. If you’re not sure about your lights, email me a photo of the controller and a puck: info@utahlightcontrollers.com.

Can I run it off a 12V battery?

Not directly. A car battery is ~12 volts. These strings want 36. Plug the Govee 36V wall brick in at home. For a car, boat, or hangar with only 12V, you need a 12V-to-36V boost converter rated for your string’s watts (a typical Pro brick is around 108W, so that’s serious current on the 12V side) or a 36V pack. A cigarette-lighter adapter is not enough. Email me before you buy a booster if you want a sanity check.

Are they actually portable?

The controller is. Take it from the house to the garage, the shed, the office, a room, a parked car, a hangar — you name it. The lights go where you can feed them 36 volts. Not FAA-certified airplane lighting. Not a 12V drop-in. Same board, different roof.

The board is four-channel — A, B, C, and D. It ships with two ports ready to run. Need more house? Add two more. Either way, you get four channels. Eaves and garage now, porch and patio later, one enclosure. Christmas and game-day at the same time. You’re welcome.

How does the onboard relay save power?

When the lights are off, a relay on the board physically cuts power. They draw zero watts — not a fake-black that still sips 36V all summer like it paid rent. That’s the electric bill. Also easier on the supply and the lights over years on the roof.

Is it open source?

The firmware is open-source WLED (EUPL v1.2). Boards leave Utah pre-flashed. Join Wi-Fi, open the browser UI, 100+ effects plus Home Assistant. Re-flash anytime. No vendor lock-in, no “please update the app.”
